Half birthday ideas for kids

4 November 2026

A half birthday falls six months after a child's birthday, so a child born on 15 December has a half birthday on 15 June. It's a small, fun celebration, usually a half cake, half a song and a little treat, and it is especially welcome for children whose real birthday falls close to Christmas.

How do you work out a half birthday?

Add six months to the birthday and keep the same day of the month. A few dates need a little thought:

BirthdayHalf birthday
3 January3 July
14 February14 August
20 June20 December
25 December25 June
29 February (leap day)29 August
31 March30 September (September has 30 days)
31 August28 February, or 29 February in a leap year

For dates on the 29th, 30th or 31st of a month, if the matching month is shorter, simply use its last day. Nobody is checking.

Who are half birthdays for?

Half birthday ideas

Half cake

Bake or buy a cake, cut it in half and serve only one side. Put on half a candle: cut a candle in two, or count half the years ("you're six and a half!"). Children find the idea of half a cake hilarious.

Half the song

Sing "Happy half birthday to you, happy half birthday to you..." and stop halfway through the last line.

Half-and-half day

A small gift, not a big one

Keep presents small, so the half birthday doesn't compete with the real one: a book, a summer toy for the garden, or a day out. For Christmas babies, something for the summer, such as a paddling pool, bucket and spade or new sandals, makes sense in June.

Half birthdays for Christmas babies

If your child's birthday is in late December, a half birthday in June can do a lot to make up for a squashed real birthday. A few tips that help the real birthday too:

Tip: Put the half birthday in the family calendar as soon as your child is born, or as soon as you decide to start. A tradition that relies on remembering is the first to go.

Frequently asked questions

What is a half birthday?

The date six months after someone's birthday. It's a small, light-hearted celebration, often with half a cake and half the birthday song, and is especially welcome for children whose birthday is close to Christmas or in the school holidays.

How do I work out my child's half birthday?

Add six months and keep the same day of the month: a 10 January birthday has a 10 July half birthday. If the matching month is shorter (for example 31 March to September), use the last day of that month.

When is the half birthday for a Christmas Day birthday?

25 June. Some families with Christmas babies use the half birthday for a summer party the child couldn't have in December.

Should you give presents on a half birthday?

Keep them small, or skip them altogether. A book, a summer toy or a day out is plenty, so the half birthday doesn't compete with the real one.

What do you do for a baby's half birthday?

A six-month photo next to the same teddy as the newborn photo, a dated handprint, and a short letter to your baby about their first six months are lovely ways to mark it.
